Over the last few weeks of lockdown, I have been getting
calls and messages from parents asking if we offered any online courses. Many
of my friends and people from my network have been puzzled on why we
(www.advaitam.in) were not offering any online courses. Zoom was in fashion,
everyone was taking online classes on Zoom, skype, etc. I was surprised and
amazed (even) to read that schools were encouraged to start taking classes
online. After a couple of weeks of online classes by the school, I am now getting
calls from parents to check if we will be able to provide one-to-one in-person
class for their children since they are now finding the online class
ineffective and basically not helping at all. One of the parent went on to
state that it was a complete waste of time! The age of the children ranged
between nursery to 8th grade.

The other day, I was on, yes, zoom app in a group video
chat of around 15 friends. People were logging in and out all the time. I could
not hear 50% of the conversation most of the time. Further, I was getting
distracted by the things happening in the background of some of the
participants. Maybe it was just me or maybe others were too. The point here is
I was having a very casual conversation with friends, at the end of the chat I
was not sure who spoke what. But I was under no pressure to remember, take notes
or understand every bit of conversation. Mind you, we were on the best network
bandwidth available using high performance mobile devices and the most
important factor being, we were all adults with tons of experience talking on
video chats for official work.

Coming back to how we work at Advaitam, all our programs
are conducted in-person and most of the time in small groups of around 6
children. The reason is simple, we need to guarantee that the children learn
whatever they have come for. These children go to top schools with the best
teachers and infrastructure. However, they do not learn fully in a classroom
size of around 25 to 40 with two teachers. Parents find out that the children
are "lagging" during PTM and they are asked to do something to bring
them up to grade level. This is where Advaitam comes in. We are, if I may, the
last line of support for the parents. We have our work cut out. The age of the
children generally ranges from 3 to 10 years. Our approach includes very
personalised strategies as per each and every child. We are able to teach these
kids in matter of few months what they could not learn in two years of school.

Now let's consider the current scenario at school,
children are learning in a group environment on a video chat. The question is
how effective is this approach? Clearly the current online schooling situation
is an unplanned emergency measure. There was no time to analyze the best
options and evaluate it's pros and cons. But now it is upon us whether we like
it or not. having said that, we still need to highlight the key challenges we
discover as the children enter this new paradigm in school education. Following
is an attempt to bring out the challenges faced by children and parents:

1) Distraction: Children being very curious are
distracted by the slightest of things e.g. external sound, sight, sudden
stoppage in teaching etc. If children are getting distracted in real classrooms
with two teachers in a closed environment, not sure what type of environment is
available at home, when, the one or both parent are also working from home on
calls.

2) Ability of learning online: Every child is wired
differently. After hundreds of years of experience, we know that children learn
better when taught in person and small groups. Yes, children do watch TV and
learn things, but it is based on the child's topic of interest. They just don't
have the skills required to learn in an effective way from video chats. Online
learning is a challenge even for the tech savvy adult, then let's not fool
ourselves by watching commercials about small children learning online.

3) Need for parental involvement: Children just can't be
left alone in front of the computer. In real world scenario adult supervision
is required constantly to monitor how things are progressing. For example,
check if the network connection is working, is the voice audible, getting
doubts cleared etc. Parents need to be involved all the time and not sure how
many parents can do that on a constant basis.

4) Network infrastructure: This is least of the problems,
but none the less it has been the same for the last decade. We are still in the
quest for uninterrupted connectivity.

But what are we worried about? All this is just temporary
situation till the lockdown continues, after that we are back to normal. Well,
this is not once in a millennium scenario. There are enough chances of similar
situations occurring in future. The answer to all this is not only online
classes but also faster learning process, smaller syllabus, dynamic academic
year. With the current schooling structure, new changes are not easy to adopt.
So who is going to suffer most? It's the children.

Advaitam will continue to support the parents and do it's
bit to ensure children do not suffer or get stressed in this trying times.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Reading comprehension is the ability of a child to read words / sentences / stories / questions etc and understand (make sense) meaning of the text and take appropriate action by way of writing a reply or by doing a physical action as per instruction.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Let us take one of the most common example of reading comprehension for your child: Exams! Your child has read all the textbooks in detail as part of the exam preparation. During exam your child makes a lot of mistakes or leaves questions without answering even though they know it when you ask them. Why does this happen? One of the main reason is that your child was unable to understand the question was because it was written in an indirect (tricky) way. Your child was unable to comprehend the question after reading it.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Reading passage and writing an answer is one of the common scenarios in English comprehension in schools. As the children go to higher grade or class the difficulty level of comprehension passages increases. For example reading a story and doing character analysis requires reading comprehension skills.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In Math, word problems issues are very common among children. This involves reading a sentence or sentences which conveys a specific scenario as a story and requires an answer in the form of a math calculation. Math word problems are probably the best example where each and every word in the problem could impact the final math calculation. Similarly science questions also requires accurate understanding.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is by far the main reason why children try to learn by rote and when the same question comes in a different way, they are unable to answer.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Reading comprehension come in to effect every time you read anything. Some other examples are where reading comprehension comes in to picture

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Reading comprehension comes in to play when you are reading newspaper online/offline. What does the news convey?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In
a work environment let's say to have to submit a proposal for a RFP
(request for proposal). You need to read through dozens or even hundreds
of pages of customer requirement, summarize your understanding and
come out with a solution.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Reading an email consisting of instructions and carrying out the instructions by way of physical actions

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Reading a user guide for an electronic gadget and trying to troubleshoot a problem

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Reading comprehension is probably the most difficult skills to master and it does take longer time than other skills to develop e.g. phonics, handwriting etc. In-fact reading comprehension evolves till you are well in to adult hood but the foundation is definitely laid during the preschool and primary school year.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Comprehending is the where the learning happens. You absorb the information and make sense of it as intended by the writer. Once this happens you can then use this learning and apply it in relevant scenarios.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Building vocabulary is one of the key aspects that helps in comprehending. A strong vocabulary means knowledge of words that when used in the right scenario will convey the message in total to the reader. The reader is thus also expected to have equal vocabulary to understand the meaning. Vocabulary builds over time and this involves a lot of reading.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Proper reading comprehension skills also helps you understand the gravity of the written word i.e. what is the writer conveying? Say, is the email conveying anger, displeasure, excitement, urgency etc?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So what should you do to ensure your child develops good reading comprehension skills:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Preschool: This is where the foundation is built. Read a lot of books with your child. Read the sentence and explain the meaning. Joint story reading sessions helps boost their liking to reading. The more they read, the more they improve.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Primary school: Introduce them to novels and story books. Slowly get away from comics (picture books) and get in to full text only books. This will work wonders in developing the reading skills.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Secondary school: Introduce them to a variety of authors and genres. This will build their vocabulary in a big way.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Teen years: Continue to engage them in reading new books, newspapers, blogs and articles. They will not only improve on reading comprehension but also develop strong spoken and writing skills.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is never late to start, no matter how old your child is currently you can still start building the reading skills. As I mentioned earlier, reading comprehension develops well in to adulthood and there is always time for them to develop this essential skill.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Indian education board has made significant changes in the exam structure and assessment system. This requires children to have good reading comprehension skills. They have introduced various research based projects which involves children to read lots of data points and writing their analysis of the situation. This is a welcome change and should continue.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In India, learning English phonics sounds is still not widely adopted. Phonics curriculum is currently part of a limited number of English medium schools. Though many of them just skim through it for the sake of it.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It has been seen over past several decades in English speaking countries that teaching phonics to children during preschool years helps them greatly in starting to read and spelling. This continues to help them as they go to higher grades.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many parents in India are unaware of the importance of teaching phonics to their children. Common issues crop up when the child reaches 1st grade like unable to read sentences or spelling mistakes. It also affects their reading comprehension which could significantly affect their academic progress in the higher grades.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Phonics is about co-relating sounds to alphabets or letters which when combined together based on specific rules helps in building English reading skills. It starts with learning individual sounds of alphabet or letters followed by blending of sounds, CVC words, short/long vowels, rhyming words, consonent blends, vowel combinations, diagraphs ,dipthongs, sight words etc.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Phonics though is a complex process for the children. Typically children start learning phonics sounds in the 2nd half of nursery. It is in LKG that the bulk of learning happens. By 2nd half of UKG the child should be able to use phonics knowledge to start reading simple sentences.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Most of the parents, as of writing this article, have not studied phonics when they were kids since it was non existant in India. Hence they do not have the required skill and knowledge to teach their own kids. In order to teach phonics, parents need to learn phonics from grounds up and also learn the process of teaching phonics. Alternatively they should enrol their kids in professional institutes who follow the right methodology and inline with the Indian education board.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Phonics is slowly becoming the defacto methodology as a precursor to reading. There is no doubt that phonics sounds definitely helps the children in starting English reading early and develop a lifelong love for reading.

Listening is one of the first senses to be activated in a child while still in the mothers womb. Listening is one of the most important part of our learning process throughout over lives. It is even more so important during early childhood education.

Listening is a medium or source of getting information or instructions. Once the data is received we need to make "sense" of the data and proceed with the next steps. Classroom education is predominantly listening based. We have teachers providing verbal information or explanation and children listening and learning. This means the child has to listen and also understand to complete the learning process.

This is, however, not the case. As we grow older our focus shifts to reading and talking. This means we are learning more visually i.e looking/reading than by listening. A lot has been written about difference between hearing and listening. The real outcome is the comprehending part where you make "sense" of all that you have heard.

Today, children are far more visually distracted to actually focus and pay attention to that is being spoken. Take this example, if you are listening to a song and want to focus deeper, what do you do? Well most of us close our eyes. Yes, the visual senses do tend to dominate and hence listening take a back seat.

Listening comprehension is a very important part of learning and understanding process. Children need to make the effort to focus on listening to teachers in the classroom and comprehending the information. In order to improve your child's listening skills you can engage them in the following easy activities / exercises:

1) Storytelling: This is by far one of the most useful activities. It must be noted that storytelling is not passive listening but also engaging in question and answer at the end of the session. In this session a short story is told and then the teacher should ask questions related to the story. This will ensure that children pay attention and are involved actively.

2) Chinese whisper or telephone: This is a fun activity which children enjoy a lot. In this activity children stand in a line and the first child whispers a message in the ear of the next child. This keep on going till the last child in the queue speaks out the message and the objective is that the final message is the same. However on many occasions this is not the case.

3) Follow the instructions: In this game children have to listen to a complex steps of instructions end to end once. Then they have to execute the instructions in the same sequence. This activity will be fun and entertaining for them.

4) Spot the error: In this game the speaker will talk about a topic and provide lots of information about it. In the process the speaker will intentionally mention erroneous information which the listener need to identify and call out immediately.

Listening comprehension is very important for children and any issues with it will lead to learning difficulties. In order to overcome visual distractions, children need to consciously make an effort to focus on listening in the classroom environment.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As of writing this article, writing is still very much an important aspect of education in India<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> and scoring good marks.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When we started Advaitam in 2011 we knew based on what we saw in the classroom environment that writing is going to become major challenge for the new generation. Beautiful and stylish handwriting would slowly but surely vanish with the advent of the mobile phone. We hear a lot of parents saying that their child just do not like to write. However the education sector in India is not yet ready to cope up with the rapid change.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">when we started our handwriting improvement classes for kids, our key focus was to make children write in a neat and legible manner, be it cursive or print English alphabets. Once the child show good improvement on this part, the next step is to increase the writing speed while keeping it legible.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As a parent how would your improve your child's handwriting? Is your child just starting to learn writing now? Or is your child already in a higher grade and needs to improve handwriting? Strategies will change based on the age and writing style. Below are some key strategies that may be applied and mind you these are not the only ones.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Practice, Practice, Practice: If there is one thing that you can do to improve anything is practice it again & again. With handwriting as well it is the same. Be ready to make your child practice regularly every day.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Start early: Include a pencil as one of your child's toy. Children generally get building blocks, cars, cartoon soft toys etc once they reach around 2 years. Give them a toy pencil. You will find a lot of foam based pencil toys. Show them how to use during play time. Then move on to thick pencil shaped crayons. One common mistake is that parents wait way too long to introduce pencil to their child.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Be consistent: Ensure that your child gets enough time to scribble and write as part of play. Buy an erasable writing board as well.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Focus on the grip: Throughout the toddler years focus on how your child grips the pencil and correct the grip early in to a tripod grip.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Academic writing: Once they start writing in school be quick to help your child write with a proper pencil and ensure they follow the proper tripod grip and stress free posture.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Join a handwriting class: If for some reason you child needs handwriting improvement, then join a proper handwriting class and ensure your child attends regularly and adapts to the changes quickly.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Encourage hobby writing: Try to develop a hobby around writing, maybe encourage story or essay writing.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Join a drawing class: Drawing does help as it essentially is writing. Encourage them to draw things of their interest. This will definitely work towards them actually enjoying using the pencil.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Left handed: if your child is left handed then writing is going to be unnatural for them. Encourage them whenever possible. Help them arrive at a good paper and hand position based on their natural style of writing.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you focus on the above strategies, you have a good chance of ensuring that your child enjoys writing.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">If you have experiences in working with your child's handwriting, please so share in the comments section.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Sunil is a 7 year old studying in 2nd grade. In the recent parent-teacher-meeting (PTM), Sunil's parents were updated on the terrible progress of their child in school. The class teacher said that the child cannot read and write as expected from a 2nd grader. The parents were aware but just didn't want to confront this issue. They had admitted their child in one of the best known preschool brands with huge infrastructure. However their child went through the entire preschool without learning to read or write. They had invested lakhs in the fees and don't know how this could have happened.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The HARD fact: They didn't invest their personal time in the child's education!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Both the parents are well educated and working. They get the best things for their child, be it clothes, toys, food etc. They make sure they go on a trip every long weekend, summer vacation and sometimes during school days, as well, to fulfill their travel dreams. In this jet-setting lifestyle they have forgotten the simple rule of spending some quality time with their child's school work, classwork & homework. They didn't realize that they need to also look in to academic stages of their child like the right age to hold pencil, read books and write sentences.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Consider this, to resolve the handwriting issue, the parents enroll their child in a handwriting improvement class. However, they just can't let go of their lifestyle. The child does not attend the class regularly. Absenteeism is taking a toll on the child's progress. Every time the child shows some improvement they go on a break and when they get back, the child is back to square one. What could have been rectified in 3 dedicated months, is not working even after 6 months. And even after all this, the parents don't want to take responsibility of their child's poor performance. They complain that the handwriting class is not working. They want the handwriting to improve within a matter of few sessions! What they are forgetting is that typically a child starts writing sometime in nursery and by UKG the handwriting basics are done. Normally handwriting is learnt over 3 years in school. Skills like handwriting, phonics, speech etc cannot be improved overnight. Children need time to comprehend and adopt the change.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is the case in almost all aspects, be it sports, arts, academics etc. One of the main reasons of children unable to excel is due to parents lack of consistency, persistence and commitment. Today there is an epidemic like situation of learning issues in children. What was considered a very simple learning skill 20 years ago e.g. handwriting, is now a major learning issue for many children. Parents need to re-look at their priorities. A minor change in their lifestyle can hugely benefit their child's learning process.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Handwriting is still an important aspect in primary and secondary education while writing this article! BTW, It's 2nd half of 2017.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Quite dramatic as it may sound, the fact is technology is bringing in massive, massive change in day to day behavior of the child. The current education system is not keeping up with this change and appears to be from the stone age. Children are learning more and faster, thanks to the internet and the way to consume this knowledge is by using smartphone or tablet.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Smartphones and tablets have now reduced to just a screen and you can use gestures to get work done. Now voice is the new hero which means you can just talk to your smartphone and it will do the work and give you a voice update. With artificial intelligence lurking around the corner, you may also not need to talk in future! :)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As you can see, we are now living in a world where the keyboard is defunct and using a pen is stone age era. However, the fact remains that the entire education system is built around using the pencil and pen.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Let's take a step back and get some perspective on this. A person born in 2010 is expected to write his way through the academic period. However the first thing this child gets to play at home is the large screen phablet. At 12 months old this child can play most of the games on the phone and by 24 months the child can open Youtube and search for the best cartoons on his own. By 36 months the child is handed a pencil and asked to write letters and words. This come as a huge shock to the child. Holding a pencil seems to be a challenge. Based on my own observation I see around 50% children having issue in holding the pencil with the correct grip and position which will help them in writing efficiently. Out of this, almost half of them end up with handwriting issues like legibility and speed.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">These kids just HATE to write. That's right. Many kids just don't like writing. They can't see the point of writing. It is cumbersome and slow process. It doesn't feel natural. Their hand hurts. Even if they have the right grip and know to write the letters, they just don't want to write. They may as well use gesture or voice and get the work done if they could have it their way.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Handwriting issues are rising at an alarming rate. Parents and teachers are clueless how to address this issue. This issue has to be tackled first at home right from the toddler years where they have still not started going to school. Here parents need to take the initiative by delaying the exposure of the child to the phone. I have seen parents offloading their work to the phone. Instead of parents engaging the child personally, they are now used to giving their phone to the child instead and sparring themselves the challenge of entertaining their own child. And this behavior is observed across the board e.g. fathers, mothers, grandparents, working or non-working.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Children should be involved in fine motor developmental activities (non-technology) first at home. Parents are wrong in expecting that the school is responsible for everything academic end-to-end. Children spend more time at home and parents are fully responsible to what they learn at home. Parents should inculcate the writing habit through play and being assertive. Remember parents, writing is the only option today to perform in school. Making your child write does not mount to cruelty! Think of it from a different angle. Delayed speech or walking is a major issue. If your 6 year old child can't speak or walk it's a major concern. Writing is similar from an academic perspective, make sure your child builds the writing skills during the preschool period.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Limit or even better completely avoid your child's exposure to gesture based games on the phone. These games conditions your child to using gestures to do things at an early age which may not be a good thing for your child. This is just one issue technology brings in to your child's life. As a parent, you need to make the right choice so that your child does not suffer academically.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">There is a good chance that writing may lose relevance in future, however till that time, there is no escaping it and children still need to learn writing.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">All parents are constantly on the lookout for courses and
programs which can help their children in academy and extra curricular areas.
The objective of these courses are from improving academic areas like phonics,
handwriting, grammar, spellings etc to improving their motor skills. Some
parents look to take the existing skills to the next level which normally would
not be covered in regular school curriculum, for example, a child make be
already good in story writing skills and the parent would look towards providing
support to realise the child’s full potential by joining a creative writing
course. Another example could be in fine arts, a child may be showing great
potential in fine arts and could attend advanced course to further enhance the
skill.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Today parents are not only ensuring the child gets academic
support but also have an eye on how to enhance the overall development of their
children. The overall development of a child boils down to the following key
aspects

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Intellectual and Cognitive

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Social and Emotional

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Speech and Language

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Physical and Motor skills

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Creativity and Imagination

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In order to touch all these aspects, parents need to
consciously take up different courses for their children over a period of time.
This also ensures that the child gets the right exposure at the right time.
Given the importance of these courses, parents should look at the experience,
approach and continuity of the teachers. Parents should look for teachers and
academies who provide personalized courses for children. This helps in ensuring
the effectiveness of the courses to a large extent.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Working on the overall development of your child is a
continuous process. Parents need to be updated on the latest developments at the
same time ensuring strong foundation for their children. This all rounded
approach will become an asset and build a solid foundation for your child’s
future.
The secret revealed :)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Summer Camps are the best time to catch up on things your child really enjoys doing. It means different things to different people. For some it means learning a totally new skill e.g. Chess, while for some it’s about upgrading your skill e.g. moving from casual painting to say water colour on canvas or abstract art and others just do nothing and take it easy. The options are unlimited and opportunities abundant!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The secret lies in the depth and approach of our programs. All summer camp programs are derived from our award winning year long programs. These programs are outcome of the years of research in content design, actual deployment in courses and fine tuning based on the response and feedback observed over the years and the approach in conducting the programs. This needs tremendous focus on child psychology and latest trends not to mention the enjoyment factor. But can all these factors be know? Yes, if you are monitoring it for years! You can see or “foresee” patterns and try new things and invent new ways of doing things. In short, gather intelligence and use it to fine tune your services. All this at great value.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">At Advaitam, children continue for years not only for the year long programs but also children come back year after year for the summer camps. We know them individually and have seen them grow older over the years . We have had children waiting for months for new programs being launched when they could join elsewhere. That’s trust and we go all out to keep it. We get great satisfaction in seeing them enjoy their time, the laughter and smiles and that’s the “kick” that makes us tick.
NOT?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I guess every child has dreamt of having a pet and many made it a reality. There are numerous research on how pets help humans emotionally to overcome grief, illness and other issues. Not to forget the sheer joy we get from having them in our lives. They become part of you and family. Soon you no longer see them as a pet but like any of your family members.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">However, many-a-times, the pet is not as happy as you. I can only say to what I have observed around me. I intend to explore what are we teaching our kids by keeping pets.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">To begin, well, we can “buy” a pet from a shop as do we buy the groceries or the cellphone. There is a feeling of pets being looked at as a commodity with a price on it’s head. I think adopting is the more appropriate way when no monetary transaction is involved. Do you buy a family member??

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">That brings me to the second most important point “INTENT”. I guess every action we do has an intent. Why did you buy the pet? What is your expectations? Here are some quite common and worst factors
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">- they look cute when they are small!
- It is the most “in thing” to do…. look at our neighbours!
- It will be a good deterrent against robbers and thieves
- It would be a great experience to take part in a pet show!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have seen a family adopt a street puppy because it was very cute and within one year they closed the grown dog out of their gate. It was no longer cute and looked like the typical stray dog! The puppy had grown dependent on the family so much that it had lost touch with living on the streets. It didn’t have any street survival skills. The dog stuck around the gate for a couple of days and had to run for it’s life with it’s tail between it’s legs, when attacked by the local street dog pack. I never saw it again.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I know people who have bought exotic birds and puppies. There is social pressure to own one. The gold fish is the classic. They are inside a cage or tied up for most of their lives. Not a good situation for the pet. I have seen many such pets being abandoned because it is becoming too expensive to maintain them. Many have some disease and it’s left to die on the road.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Then there is the security dog mostly bought and given to the security guard as a companion on leash. The dog stays under the security cabin on a meter long leash for rest of it’s life. It barks through out the day and night and is fed to the extent of being obese.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So what message are we passing on to our children?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
It’s normal to treat animals as commodities and we can do all this just because we can!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We give life imprisonment to human criminals as punishment and still believe it’s ok to keep animals in confinement for our pleasure, It’s ok to keep them on a leash for most part of their lives
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">What if animals keep us, humans, as pets? I always thought that the movie planet of the apes was THE movie to show to children. Children may get a lesson on the meaning of freedom and respect in true sense.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Animal rights needs to be brought to the fore before pets are adopted. This has to be done right from school with a dedicated chapter on it. As we teach “do not lie”, “do not pollute” we should also teach “do not take away others (humans & animals) freedom”. Ministry of Education and education boards.. are you listening?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Great programs at one place:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As a parent you are most likely taking you child to different afterschool and weekend programs. One common issue is that, more often than not, you have to ferry you child to various institutes in your location since a single institute may not cater to other programs. This issue gets considerably addressed at Advaitam where you can enrol your child for multiple programs and save travel time considerably. Many programs means more options for you child. You could enrol for one program for sometime and later switch to another program easily. This brings in the much needed variety for your child. Further, you need not worry about the safety of your child and quality of the programs since this is taken care completely by Advaitam team to give you a predictable and assured quality service. You child is also comfortable going to a known place.

2. Highly researched and advanced curriculum / approach:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">You will often come across institutes offering programs with no relevance to the new generation child, they still follow obsolete curriculum and ancient teaching approach. The result is that the child is bored quickly and most likely discontinue the program. At Advaitam, all programs are continuously evolving so as to maintain relevance to the new generation. Most of the programs have no end date and children can continue for years at the same place. The children get to see and do new things all the time.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

3. Individualized Attention

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The name “Advaitam” means “unique” in sanskrit. The founding philosophy of Advaitam is to work with each child on an individual level. We believe that every child deserves to be dealt individually and we put in all our efforts in understanding each child, how they respond to brain stimulus and what works for that child. We pride ourselves in making a difference to each and every child. While there are institutes who bench mark their performance on volume (no of children), we would like to bench mark on the depth of interaction with each child. More the depth more the impact.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

4. World class learning aids and kits

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We believe in providing world class, best of the breed learning aids, tools and kits to our students be it indigenous or imported. We try to get the best products to enable learning to the best possible extent. We are not a brand shop that is restricted to a particular brand of kit. It is very important that children get the best possible exposure to learning. As parents it may be impractical to purchase expensive kits due to issues with maintaining them and getting full value for the money. At Advaitam, children get exposure to great tools at the fraction of the price. It’s a win-win situation for parents which ever way you look at it.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

5. Secure, energetic and vibrant environment:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In today’s world it would be foolish to believe that environment does not make a difference in learning. It definitely makes an impact by taking away concerns regarding security, hygiene and negativity. At Advaitam, security and hygiene is of utmost importance. The entire place exults positive energy and vibrancy.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

6. Skilled and Experienced team:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Advaitam takes away the concern related to finding appropriately skilled teachers for your child. Advaitam has a stringent screening process to get the right teachers with the right skills, experience, attitude and passion for various programs. We believe that teachers who are passionate about their subject pass on the excitement to the students. Children pickup on the excitement quickly and that in turn helps in the learning process. We do not conduct programs with standby teachers who do not have the skills and attitude.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

7. Flexible scheduling of programs:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">All the programs are scheduled as per the convenience of the children and parents. Appropriate compensatory system is in place in case any child misses a session due to exams, illness etc. Programs are distributed across the week and at various times to enable children to enrol to as many programs as possible. Thus parents can bring their child to a known and trusted place which also gives them a peace of mind.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

8. Year long (after school / weekends) and Summer programs:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">No matter which time of the year it is, there are always programs available for your child. You can join any batch at any time since the approach is individualized and not as batches. A child can set their own pace of learning. Year long programs are available as as after school and weekend batches. These programs are typically continuous and not have any end dates. During summer vacations there are programs available through out the day and in convenient packages as per your need. You can choose the programs you want and the duration. It can’t get better than this!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

9. Great Value:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Advaitam believes that all the above facilities need not come at a premium. All programs can be packaged to suit you requirement and multiple options are available to cater to various spending needs. One way of looking at this is, a trip to a movie or treat at a burger joint is costlier than a session of most of our programs. So value lies in how you look at your childs extra curricular needs.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

10. Day care with a difference:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Advaitam’s Day care plus program helps you utilize your childs time at day care in a very productive and meaningful manner. The enriched day care facility at Advaitam is a departure from the standard mundane day care you have been used to earlier.

Don’t try to make adults out of your 8 year olds

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Though this is a very broad topic and applicable in a lot of scenarios, I am restricting the scope to scenarios observed during enrichment sessions.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is not uncommon to see parents taking an active interest in their childs learning and progress in afterschool activities. This is good and helps in ensuring the child is getting the desired benefits. However, as part of this, parents sometimes tend to have unrealistic expectations on the application of the learning. For example, let’s say the 8 year old child has learned about gears and it’s mechanical advantage as part a session. I have seen parents asking the child “How will you use gears to solve other problems”. This is a very open question for even adults to answer. When the child starts to explain the project, the parent asks “what did you to learn if you can’t answer this!”. I guess the parent is expecting a mature and adult-like reply from the child. What they miss is the child perspective at that point in time. Other similar cases include telling the child that the experiment was so easy or small. Maybe for an adult it may look easy, but once you get down to doing, it’s definitely not easy.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Another scenario is bombarding the child with information, which can be appreciated only by knowledgeable adults. This, I guess, is intended to give the child an edge above the rest. The result, child talking about some science concept without any perspective and context about it. I think there is only so much a child of a certain age can understand about the theory of relativity . Then there are the parents who would actually have an elaborate question & answer session right then at the centre, which leaves the child miserable throughout the session in fear of the Q&A at the end of the session. This kind of pressure not only discourages that child from attending further sessions, but also make them feel low on self esteem.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I think that “some” parents want the child to be 10 yrs more knowledgeable than other kids, may be. But realistically It works better for the child if they are given enough freedom to explore open ended pursuits without having to answer for it!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When I think of my school/college teachers, I visualize most of them hurriedly teaching a topic, basically going through the motions of transferring textbook knowledge to me. In a class room of about 50, nobody cared how many actually understood what was taught in that session. That was the job of exams/assessments right? Well, there were many kids in class who did all the study at home and just came to class for attendance sake. They did score good grades :)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
Coming back to teachers, is it not the teachers responsibility to "try" and spark the interest of the student in the subject they teach? Try and capture their imagination, transfer their passion for the subject to the students? unlock their minds? I think of the movie Matrix (part 1), where Morpheus and Neo are locked in a Kung Fu fight inside the simulation. Morpheus tries successfully to make Neo see beyond the obvious thus unlocking his mind. Morpheus keeps saying that he can only show him the door and Neo would have to walk through it. For me, that's classic, that's how it should be, THAT'S UTOPIA :)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
How many teachers really like the topic they teach? Are they passionate about the subject? say History, how many teachers actually go beyond the textbook and bring in excitement? Not many. Children need to be inspired at a very young age, they get inspired by the Cartoon characters in TV shows. Teachers who have such a major share of a child's life should make the effort to inspire the young minds. This does not need additional time and it does not require you to work individually with each student. I think it is a matter of getting the attention of students by engaging their minds with questioning, reasoning and depth of the subject. Making them look forward to the next time. Does this need a PHD or certification? Nope, it needs a conscious effort from the teacher to be mentally present in the class their are teaching :). An inspired child always grows up to change the world and inspire the future generations.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When I finished my formal education, the one thing that had become part of my life till then was "exams". Suddenly, without any further "exams" in sight, I felt that now I had the power to achieve anything I wanted in this world. I basically didn't have to perform against a set benchmark. But was I so wrong! In the coming decade or two of my career, I have been through innumerable "exams" (read appraisals). I wonder if there is any time in the living period of a person when there are no assessments or exams. Atleast for now, your family members do not make you go through a formal assessment!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Back in school life, everything was about the marks and percentages. Schools have changed a lot since then and now do continuous assessment in a "non threatning" manner :) to the extent that CBSE has come out with a very well written whitepaper on why it is important to have a continuous and comprehensive evaluation. Maybe sometime in future schools will only do assessments and leave the teaching to be done at home :).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anyway, the fact of the matter is that, we now have a huge opportunity of create an assessment software so that history of past performance can be maintained. Hundreds of startups are building cutting edge school assessment software. Well, atleast it is great news that google is now allowing past history to be forgotten.... hmmm. As humans we are now making sure that we are performing as expected (at school, work) against standard benchmarks and trying to improve all the time.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The point of this blog is to provoke some thought on how far and how comprehensively we want to assess children to ensure that they are achieving knowledge "as per expectations". As the CBSE whitepaper mentions that assessents also helps in knowing the effectiveness of teaching methods. Great! Lets also assess how assessments are performing... so on and so forth. Maybe it okay to not assess all the time. Maybe it's okay to perform to your own benchmark. Well.... Maybe.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Child day care facilities have now become an indispensable part of life. While parents are working hard, they need support system for taking care of their child/ren. With more and more nuclear families, without grand parents, day care is a necessity.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When talking about a child in the 1.5+ years age group, it is extremely important in the current environment to choose not just any day care but an enriched day care. Advaitam Child Enrichment Centre, a pioneer in providing after school and weekend enrichment programs, is now making available it's award winning programs as part of it's day care facility in HSR Layout, Bangalore.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Apart from the standard facilities provided by day care, Advaitam will provide a range of cutting edge enrichment programs for kids starting from 1.5+ years onwards. These programs will be available through out the week and can be customized to a childs needs. The new-gen parents are now looking to add value to their childs time spent at a day care facility by enrolling them in a slew of enrichment programs. Advaitam is more than well positioned to cater to this fast upcoming trend with it's highly evolved programs.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hence choosing a day care is no longer an exercise of choosing a place for your child after school but also what enrichment it can provide to the child in the day care.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Over the last year I have come across some children who refused to do certain science activities as part of our advanced learning program. Initially, I thought the child was too tired or was having a bad day. However, over a period of time a pattern started to emerge. The child was avoiding a certain brand of product. Any attempt to showcase the great features of the product drew sharp criticism and comparison with other brand even though this product had a huge learning advantage over the other brand.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This got me thinking on how brand awareness was influencing the learning process of the child. It is well known today that a child is particular about the brand of clothes, shoes, restaurant, dad's car and even the holiday destination! The other day, I asked an 8 year old child in which school he was studying, he promptly replied ".. in X school, it's the best in Bangalore." The child had chosen to stress on the fact that the school was best and he is associated with the best. This kind of brand worshiping used to be adult domain :). Sadly not anymore!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have often come across children who claim to have completed multiple levels in robotics using kits from a very "popular" brand, however they seem get lost at the very basics of the concept itself. It is quite natural for a child to want to have bragging rights on certain "been there" and "done that" stuff, however learning (or gaining knowledge) does not depend of any specific brand. Many parents take a blind decision based on the branding of the products in a learning centre only to realize their folly much later.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Certain educational product brands have very high recall factor among children. These brands were early movers and of course great products and quality. The effectiveness of using them to gain knowledge completely lies in the execution and instructor knowledge. This is something that seems to have passed by many a children and parents. This topic was address in a different perspective in my earlier blog "Robotics for kids ... really?".
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I guess this is true for the main stream education as well, where children compete for the best colleges, universities etc. These great brands have become greats due to past performances no doubt, but these are great because of the people who worked there. When these people are gone and replaced by new ones, it certainly will not remain the same.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Learning science should be as brand neutral as possible. There are great "branded" products that facilitate and make it easier to learn, but what scares me is the prospect of a child not ready to learn for want of a specific brand. Are these early indications or are these one off instances time will tell.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"My child is silent and does not mix easily with other kids and does not speak out as some of her peers do. Please let me know how I can change this behavior. The teacher has been trying for a long time!" asked a concerned parent to me. I struggled to keep myself calm while I went about counselling the parent that this is not a "symptom" that needs to be addressed or if I dare say "cured".
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is hardly surprising that a child who mixes "easily" and "speaks out" frequently is the most desired trait by parents and "teachers". My apologies for the numerous quote-unquote, but I need to emphasize some words. :). Over the past many years, someone who speaks less or participate less came to be known as "introverts" and the opposite were called "extroverts". I fail to understand the need for such a classification in the first place. Anyway, somehow introverts have been looked upon as lacking since they were not extroverts! However this was not the case with extroverts.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I will limit my thoughts on this topic in the school environment. Why do teachers think that an introvert child should somehow change in to an extrovert? Does the education board say so? is this behavior identified as an issue that will be detrimental to the child to live a happy and fulfilling life? Nope. But still, parents and many teachers are on a quest to turn the child in to something they are not. There are numerous examples where the introvert is tested daily e.g. dramatics. Introverts may find it uncomfortable to speak out with ease in front of an audience, which is quite natural. They may in fact dislike this but still need to go through the motions for sake of grades.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Another example, when a subject is being taught in class the introvert may not speak out immediately on a specific query. They may instead try to figure out the answer themselves and may need to come back later. But later, another subject has already started and thus they would get into ongoing cycle where they are unable to clarify their queries and may shy away from asking at a later date on fear of being embarrassed. This may cause pileup of their doubts and in the end severely affect their academic performance.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Schools should take note of these scenarios and ensure these children are given enough opportunity and time which is their right. The current schooling environment is inclined towards extroverts and need to seriously work on making it an inclusive environment for the introverts as well. Being an introvert is as natural as being an extrovert. Both these are behavior should be accepted as equal. Discrimination can have serious consequences on their self esteem and confidence of the child in the long run. There are numerous examples of great leaders who were introverts and they have brought huge changes in the world. Being an introvert was their strength that made them who they are! So let the child use the strength of being an introvert and thrive. You will see that is the best thing that happened to them.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As part of our science program, children build working models of various real life machines and systems. They usually have some kind of an instruction manual to support their build. However, they also need to use their own "judgement" and "logical thinking" many times to complete them. During this process they make several mistakes e.g. forgetting to fix a part, fixing it the wrong way, wrong place, fixing the wrong part etc. Sooner or later they hit the road block and need to find where they made the mistake. This is a very crucial and important learning process i.e. to go about troubleshooting the issue.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One major tendency of children today is that they do not want to make any mistake. They want to build the model without making any mistake. They want to get it right the first time around :). While building the model they would check with the instructor at each and every point even when the instruction manual is showing the same e.g. every time they take a part they would like to confirm if the part is the right one, before fixing the part, if this is right place, right way etc. If they are giving answers to these questions, they would be simply assembling without putting their "judgement" or "logical reasoning" to test. Making a mistake seems to them like "negative" marks or losing face. When you dig deeper in to this behavior you can see the connection with the school grading system. They think of the build projects are exams and any mistakes are marks lost! In school children are penalized for making mistakes in exams by getting lower marks and grades. This is like a rap on the knuckles for making a mistake. This becomes part of their learning experience as well!! They learn that making mistakes will bring down their marks/grades, possibly get scolding from parents and looked down upon by friends and neighbors.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Fast forward to their first job, they find there is no absolute way of doing things. They look for readily available solutions to real time issues. ALAS! they have been "conditioned" to their core in school. Troubleshooting or problem solving suddenly look difficult. They may as well call the company support team to solve real time issues. They are not able to trust their "judgement" or take a "logically" thought out decision. They are unable to analyze issues and find a solution based on "gut instinct". All these point to lack of creativity, innovative thinking, risk taking and thinking out of the box. All these are big words but these are essential life skills that needs to be applied more in personal life than professional.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We are a long way away from undoing and unlearning some of the past educational practices. We need to realize that conditioning children in schools is not the best practice. We need to let go of these fast and not hang-on to them for fear of losing control. We can then expect great leaders and innovators who can look at this world through a new perspective and bring in the next wave of evolution.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Recently I watched a masala Hindi movie called "Student of the year". It has a song called "Ratta maar.. " meaning "learn by rote" or "to mug up". Nothing against the movie though :)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This song somehow managed to stay in my mind for so long that I had to oblige myself by writing a blog on it :). Last time I heard anything about this, was in the movie "3 idiots". However the movie was against the concept of rote learning.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After looking at the past decade of developments in education system, it is very sad to admit that we have made very little progress on rote learning in the graduate and masters examinations. Which is quite surprising. These exams should be re coined as "memory tests".
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Yes, we do hear a lot of change is happening in the education system, however it seems to move at a snails pace. Batches and batches of students are passing out by using the core principle of "Ratta maar". They have now become parents and their child follows the same principle.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Getting a solution for this will need all the academics and education board to put a focused effort. This looks like a distant dream for now.
Really?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now a days there are a large number programs mushrooming in India intended to introduce children (8-14 yrs) to robotics. Children when they hear robotics, visualize themselves building a humanoid robot. What they are not aware is the core science and programming that they should be aware of before building any robot.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Most of the robotics program tend to come out only during vacations. These programs run for 2 - 3 weeks and then close down. The children build roughly 10 - 15 robots doing different functions e.g. follow a line, avoid obstacles etc. These are good for children as an initial exposure. But many of these tend to be mostly assembling the robots and do pre-configured activities.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Robotics is ultimately science in action. Children should get to work with the core science concepts much more before they start assembling a robot. There is a lot of talk on building scientific temperament. How much of a scientific temperament can be inculcated in 3 weeks? Not much really, only a long term exposure can make the desired impact.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But then, for many parents, these programs are meant to pass time of their children during vacations and that objective is served. There is nothing wrong in that :). Parents should go beyond the short term view and think long term. It is not easy for a 10 year old to grasp advanced science concepts easily and retain the knowledge. It works best if the child is allowed to pace themselves according to their comfort. Following a time restricted schedule is the biggest killer of innovative and creative thinking.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Does problem solving come naturally to everyone? I am not sure, over the years I have seen people waiting to get problems solved by someone else and others actually solving problems or atleast trying to solve them. We all face various types of problems on a daily basis, some can be solved ourselves and are in our control, others are quite complicated or dependant on others. What I am interested is how many of us are willing to try and find out if the problem at hand can be solved ourselves. If not, who could help solve it.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
Problem solving "behaviour" may have it's roots in our early child hood. Let me take a very common childhood problem "toy car stops working". What are the expected reactions:

Case 1: The child tells parents. They reply "thats fine you can play with some other toy, you have lots of them". The child starts playing with some other toy.

Case 2: The child tells parent. Parent looks around, opens it, checks the batteries, asks when it stopped working etc. Dabbles with it, opens some screws and BAM! finds a loose wire. Gets the wire soldered and the toy starts working.

I am referring to the case 2, the childs parent has demonstrated problem solving behaviour and thats the first lesson the child learns. There is good chance that the next time some toy get stops working, the child may try to fix it on his own. The child now knows that it is quite possible to find the reason and get it fixed.

Problem solving behaviour needed not come naturally, it may get inculcated through various early childhood experiences. The more the problem solving situations the better the child gets at it. This directly enhances their analytical/logical thinking and reasoning skills. As parents you need to demonstrate these skills in front of your child and provide enough opportunity for them to solve problems through external sources.
At Advaitam Child Enrichment Centre, one of our flagship courses is the Young Scientist program. This program is designed with the intention of generating interest of children in STEM (science, Technology, Engineering and Math) from a young age.

There are quite a few institutes in India who have taken up STEM education for children. Based on my experiences in teaching STEM to children, one key challenge is how this learning can become part of the child's subconscious memory or, if I may call, permanent learning.

Recently there has been a lot of focus and to some extent hype on the philosophy of "Learn by doing". Children are doing hands on experiments and understanding the science concepts. They are learning different topics of STEM by complete hands on approach. Many such programs, unfortunately, come with a fixed end date. Parents approach these types of programs as a one-time investment. The child learns a lot while the program is in progress. However, once the program gets over, the child starts losing touch and eventually the learning is not total.

One way of achieving longer "persistence of learning" is through continuous exposure of the child to the concept. This would mean the child gets enough "open" time to play around with the concept. During this period, the child pushes the limit till the concept passes all the tests which the child puts it through. This can also be called the "What-if" phase. Once the child is comfortable on the concept the next stage is to help others in trouble shooting any issues. This is where the child applies personal experience and learning to a 3rd person situation. This, I feel, is the stage when learning becomes permanent. This can also be termed as the teaching phase. Finally comes the reflection phase when the child uses this learning as a reference in other projects/activities. Here the child keeps referring back the earlier learning and applies it to new situations.

Open ended activities encourage a child to do activities and challenge themselves. This is great way of building their unique personality and core reasoning skills. India's schooling system is evolving to these realities. I feel the schools may not have enough resources for such an comprehensive approach. After school programs definitely can bridge this gap. Children spend 6 - 7 hours in school. Hence the comprehensive and focused approach works well in after school and weekend programs. A totally open and relaxed environment definitely goes a long way in capturing a childs imagination.
